Additional Summer/Enrichment Programs

There are numerous educational and enrichment opportunities available for interested students.

 

JUNIORS - Murray State University Commonwealth Honors Academy
The Academy brings together 120 current juniors from Kentucky and the surrounding region for 3 weeks for an exciting, challenging, academic enrichment program.  Students will:

  • receive 6 hours of honors level university studies credit
  • have the opportunity to take an additional 6 hours of tuition free university courses at Murray State University during their seniors year and
  • be awarded a 4 year $2,000 renewable housing scholarship to attend Murray State University

Students must have:

  • completed their junior year of high school to attend
  • a composite ACT of approximately a 25 (or equivalent on the PSAT, SAT) and a 3.5 GPA
  • other credentials, such as community involvement, teacher recommendations are taken into consideration in the selection process.

 

 

SOPHOMORES- The Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics

The Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics is a dual-credit residential high school for academically exceptional Kentucky students. The Academy will be housed on the campus of Morehead State University, consistently ranked as one of the safest campuses in the Commonwealth. Scheduled to open in August 2015, the Craft Academy will meet the unique educational needs of academically gifted and talented high school juniors and seniors in the Commonwealth. A college-level curriculum will allow students to finish high school while also completing up to two years of university coursework. The academic rigor of the Craft Academy will challenge students to excel at the highest level. They will be focused on a core of math and science courses while engaging in electives in arts and humanities. In addition, the Craft Academy will offer unique STEM+X courses that will enrich educational experiences and develop competencies in entrepreneurship and innovation, design and creativity, and civic and regional engagement. The residential college experience and environment promotes excellence, innovation and creativity while developing the full potential of the state’s brightest minds and most promising future leaders. Students will live on campus in a newly renovated residence hall designed for high school-aged students. The facility will have meeting and social space and be staffed 24/7. Counselors and advisors will also be available.

Admission Requirements

Craft Academy applicants are high school sophomores who will have completed geometry, algebra I, and algebra II by the end of their sophomore year. Students are selected based on ACT or SAT scores; academic grades from ninth and tenth grades; interest in advanced careers in science, technology, engineering and math; student responses to application essay questions; interviews by Academy selection committee; and recommendations from teachers and other individuals who can attest to a student’s need and preparedness for the program.

 

Craft Academy applicants must:

  • Be a current resident of the state of Kentucky;
  • Be a high school sophomore;
  • Complete geometry, algebra I and algebra II prior to enrollment;
  • Score a minimum 18 English, 22 reading, and 22 math on the ACT; and
  • Submit a completed online application and all required materials no later than January 31, 2020

 

Cost of Attendance

The cost of tuition, room and a meal plan (19 meals per week) are covered by the Academy. Students will be responsible for purchasing textbooks, additional meals and any other personal or miscellaneous expenses. There is no fee to apply.

SOPHOMORES- The Gatton Academy Information

The Gatton Academy offers students the opportunity to receive at least 60 hours of college credit and a high school diploma during their junior and senior years of high school.  As a Gatton student, you will live with other Gatton Academy students in Schneider Hall on Western Kentucky University’s campus, providing opportunities for meaningful relationships with peers. Students take classes taught by university professors focusing on various STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) subjects. Interest and ability in math and science will be supplemented with opportunities for research during the academic year as well as in the summer. Additionally, students encounter a broad range of academic experiences in the humanities, languages, and social sciences.

The Gatton Academy selects approximately 60 Kentucky residents each year to attend the program. Gatton Academy applicants are high school sophomores who will have completed Geometry, Algebra I, and Algebra II by the end of their sophomore year. Students are selected based on SAT or ACT scores; academic grades from ninth and tenth grades; interest in advanced careers in science, technology, engineering, and math; student responses to application essay questions; interviews by Academy staff members; and recommendations from teachers and other individuals who can attest to a student's need and preparedness for the program.  As this is a residential program, family support is also considered. The writing portion of the ACT and SAT is not required for admission to the Gatton Academy.

Gatton Academy applicants must

  • be a current resident of the state of Kentucky,
  • be a sophomore or have achieved sophomore status,
  • complete Geometry and Algebra II prior to enrollment,
  • score a minimum 22 math on the ACT or score a minimum 520 math on the SAT, and
  • submit all required materials no later than February 1, 2020

JUNIORS AND SENIORS - US Senate Youth Program
If you are interested in pursuing a career in public service (Law enforcement officer, Firefighter, Animal control officer, Correctional officer, Military, Social worker, Mental health therapist, Substance abuse counselor, Public health nurse, City attorney, Teacher, School Counselor, Principal, Superintendent, Crisis line counselor, Civil rights worker, Youth leader, Immigrant support specialist, Disability services worker, Hospice care workers , etc.) - Please speak to Mrs. Bird or Mrs. Glass for information on an opportunity for a $10,000 scholarship and paid trip to Washington DC.

Other qualifications:
Qualified high school juniors or seniors must show demonstrated leadership by serving in elected or appointed positions in which they are actively representing a constituency in organizations related to student
government, education, public affairs and community service. They must be actively serving in qualified leadership positions,enrolled in high school and living in the state that they will represent for the entire 2019–2020 academic year.
